Whithorn Lodge is a working smallholding in The Machars (gaelic for
"low-lying coastal plains") area of Dumfries and Galloway; a
forgotten area in the south west of Scotland. It has a rural charm
with spectacular scenery and a mild climate, it is only 20 miles from
the Isle of Man and benefits from the warm waters of the gulf stream.

Garlieston is on the east side of the Machars, its claim to fame is the
development of the Mulberry Harbours during the second World War
Today it is a sleepy harbour mainly catering for small leisure craft and
fishing trips. Whithorn Lodge was originally built as a butlers Lodge
for Galloway House. The original Galloway House was built in
approximately 1740 by Lord Garlies.

At Whithorn Lodge we specialise in rare breed pigs and in particular the Tamworth, a golden
red pig closely related to the old forest pig, thought of as the nobility among pigs, recent
additions to the menagerie are two Iron Age pigs (looking more like wolves than pigs!). We
also have Kune Kune pigs, a small pig originating from New Zealand and some orphaned
lambs who will be kept as mobile grass cutters! We have a few Suffolk Chickens to give a nice
supply of fresh eggs for breakfast along with our own bacon and sausages.

We offer Bed and Breakfast in the Lodge, we like to think of our guests as an extension of the
family and endeavour to make the visit as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. We can give
plenty of suggestions of places to visit and activities in the area.
